Just three short years ago we took a quiet walk through our little town of Soso, Mississippi – imagining what life might have been like for our namesake and his sweet family back when the town was growing, prospering and looking forward to a bright future ahead.

And it was there, in the spotlight shone on a little town, and the memories of family outings and meals shared and the places we came to call home, where we first revealed our plan for a historic place deep in the piney woods. A place that was always meant to spark and play host to the most beautiful stories of families, of moments, and of love.

Soon, we found that our story was no longer our own. It was yours. You came, two by two, family joined with family, and you added your chapter to the history of the little Cotton Gin in the woods.

You brought along with you artists – photographers, florists, designers, planners and more – and they transformed our little farm into a visual narrative of your life together.

You’ve transformed us, and you’ve changed the meaning of this place. Three years ago we set out to tell you our story, and ever since you have set out to tell us yours. And what beautiful tales they have been.

Now, we invite you to look back with us as we remember where we began, the journey we’ve taken together over the last few years and all that it has meant to us, and all who are now a part of the story of The Gin at Rasberry Greene.

Where our story began…

Before we ever revealed the purpose of “Rasberry Greene” we first wanted to share with you the power behind the name – and why this place holds so much meaning for us. Over two weeks we released our history, piece by piece, character by character. And you came along with us. Over 4,000 folks read our chronicles of this seemingly-forgotten place. You called to tell us about your tales of Soso, Mississippi, your memories of Mr. Bill, Betty and Joe, and of your own family remembrances and how they were shaped by this tiny town and all who called her home.

What would Mama do?

As construction began, and planning was in full swing, we took a moment to consider what we wanted for you. We imagined all of the celebrations to come and all of the beautiful people we would come to know. And even before we knew you, you spoke to us. We saw your moments to come and the memories you would hold dear. And because of you, we made a choice. We decided that to preserve those moments, and to make those memories as special as possible, you needed a place that would feel like home. And home is where those you love want the absolute best for you.

In that moment, we decided that at Rasberry Greene, our folks would feel like they had come home to “Mama’s house.” Fewer rules, restrictions, and policies. Want to hang your dress from the arbor? Let us get a nail and hammer. Envisioning a wall of frames and blooms? Let us help you make it happen. We allow for extra days for setup and cleanup to ensure you and your family can fully enjoy your wedding day without feeling rushed or pressured. We open our property to photographers and artists to capture your engagement and bridal photos at any time, at no charge. If it means that you will feel more at home here, we want to make it a reality for you.

From that moment on, we would ask ourselves “What would Mama do?” when deciding on how we would interact with our precious guests and their families. And it has served us well. After all, Mama does know best.

Our Very First Wedding

Long before the walls of the Gin were raised, even before our purpose was revealed, we hosted our very first wedding. Intimate and personal, the ceremony was conducted beneath the pines and represented the first of many stories to come for this place. The bride explained in her own words:

“When we started to talk about getting married, it felt easy and peaceful. We both knew we wanted our wedding to feel the same; to represent our story, but not to define it; to honor our commitment to a life-long companionship, not the things that our culture tells us are important. We wanted our families to feel a part of something sacred, and our vows to be more than a tiny moment swallowed up by a thousand others.

We wanted to speak our vows in a place that held meaning to us, that had a story of its own to add to ours.”

Your story in the details

As we got to know more and more of the incredible wedding vendors who came in and out of our lives through your weddings and special events, we realized that they shone a light all their own. The stories they tell through their work are compelling and meaningful, and they deserve to be recognized for all they do to make your day come alive. We decided to start a blog series entitled “Mississippi Makers: Your stories in the details…”

Our beautiful friends shared their experiences with us – how they tell your stories through their craft, and the advice they have for those looking to express their personalities, histories, and connections through visual mediums. And you honored them with your readership and by sharing their reflections again and again. Tens of thousands of visitors came to read about their work and to share with others. We’re so thankful for all of our readers, and for those who participated in this journey with us.

We’re a blue ribbon vendor, y’all!

Within a few short months of opening the doors to our first weddings, we were incredibly honored to be named a “Southern Weddings Blue Ribbon Vendor.”

The Cotton Gin Market

Also in our first year, we decided to share this place with even more folks and to shine a light on all of Mississippi’s craftsmen, purveyors, and artists – even those not in the wedding industry – by creating the first-ever Cotton Gin Market. We’ve just completed our third festival and can’t wait to continue to share the incredible creations of these folks again in 2018.

Your stories, shared.

Over the last three years, we have been so honored to see so many of your beautiful stories shared in publications all over the country.

Last year, we were humbled to be included in PopSugar’s collection of the best wedding venue in each state as the representative of Mississippi, which was then featured on MSN.com.

The changing seasons in the Piney Woods

Over the last three years, we’ve seen you transform the Gin into your wedding paradise, but we’ve been blessed to see the beautiful workings of nature transform it as well. From the rare snowy days to the changing colors of Autumn, we’re always in awe of this stunning place and the power of change.

We’ve added a fire pit, three arbors, new lighting and more – and there is always more to come.

Becoming a permanent part of our beautiful state.

When you take a drive through Mississippi, you find yourself surrounded by the workings of nature, historical sites telling of times gone by, and reminders of our deeply agricultural past. As part of an effort to preserve these places, Mississippi designates specific locations as part of the Mississippi Agritourism initiative. This initiative has particular requirements to qualify as an agritourism location, and we are very excited to be included in this listing as a working pine tree farm. As part of this designation, you’ll now find multiple signs leading you to our gate on major highways.

A new honor to lead us into another wonderful year.

After three beautiful years of getting to know you and your sweet families, we’re energized and excited to continue this journey. There are still so many stories yet to be told!

And thanks to you – your thoughtful and kind reviews, your beautiful (and beautifully-captured) weddings, and the inspiration you have provided to help us improve, grow and learn – we’re honored to be included as a 2018 pick for The Knot’s Best of Weddings listing.

Thank You for a wonderful beginning, and for so much to come.

Your trust and your willingness to include us in your lives have created magic in this place. The Gin at Rasberry Greene began as a representation of our own family history – moments shared, memories made – but now it is something else altogether.

It’s yours, and it shines with the power of your stories and the future of all who have chosen this place as the setting for their cherished moments.

Here’s to a fantastic new year for you all, and for all of your stories yet to be told.

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.”

We’ve all heard our mamas say that old, wedding saying at one point or another.

It reminds a bride to carry something of each of those categories with her on her wedding day for good luck. This Old English tradition has turned into a whimsical and fun way for brides to carry tokens of their loved ones with them as they walk down the aisle. Whether it’s a blue patch from her dad’s old work shirt sewn into the underside of her wedding dress or a handmade jewelry creation that holds pieces of her grandmothers treasured broach that wraps around her bouquet, this tradition has allowed brides another way to incorporate things of meaning into their special day.

It’s a way to breathe a family memory into the new life they will nourish and grow with their husband.

This marriage of family stories and creativity is something that inspires Kelly Quick of Jovial Art to push her creative limits. Just like the family stories and heirlooms, no two pieces of her jewelry are the same.

How did you get your start in jewelry making?

I graduated from Mississippi State University in December of 2011, and being that I didn’t have a job, I had little to no money for Christmas presents. I’ve always had a love for jewelry and accessories, especially necklaces, so I began experimenting with different types of necklaces, buttons, and beads. I look back at my first necklaces and am quite horrified at how they were made, but those are also the ones that are the most special!

What is the inspiration behind your jewelry and art?

My great Aunt Bea (yes, I had an Aunt Bea and she was the coolest ever) was a jewelry fanatic. She always had the best stories of how she acquired her jewelry, and if she couldn’t remember where she got it, she would describe its appearance in the most beautiful way, creating a story in itself. I like for each piece to have a story, even though many times it just needs some refreshing. Looking through my personal collection, you will find a mix of new and vintage statement pieces. Mixing modern ideas with vintage jewelry is my go to, and it has not failed me yet!

What are some of the most unique ways you’ve seen your jewelry used?

I have really only ever seen my jewelry worn in the traditional way. Each piece is so original that it makes such a statement all by itself! I have seen my necklaces worn with beautiful, complimentary outfits that add even more elegance and charm.

What is your favorite part of creating custom jewelry?

One of my favorite parts about creating custom jewelry is the fellowship with customers, combined with carrying out their artistic visions. As someone who loves a social setting and custom pieces of any style (fashion, home decor, jewelry) I appreciate a piece being one of a kind. I feel so honored when they trust me to create a piece for them, whether it be through expanding their ideas or giving me free creative roam. I love seeing their reaction to a finished piece. Some have even cried and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

What’s secretly your favorite medium that you create with?

It is no secret that I hand stitch many of my necklaces, however I love watercolor. Anytime I paint, watercolor is my medium of choice. I love the movement and unexpectedness that comes with watercolor, and the end result is never disappointing.

How do you think your jewelry can be used to tell a unique wedding story?

One of my favorite things about making jewelry for a bride is that she usually wants to use a piece that belonged to her mom, grandmother, or something that is special to her. Adding my flair to a piece that is already one of a kind, creates a story that is even more unique and beautiful. Even if they choose not to use a family heirloom, each piece that I design for a bride is unlike any I have made before. Inspiration is based solely on her personality and style, and I take pride in designing a piece that makes her feel lovely on her wedding day. She will forever have that piece and maybe one day pass it down to her children and grandchildren.

If you could write your future bride-self a note to read on your wedding day, what would it say?

Bride Kelly,

Hopefully you are sitting in a room with your favorite ladies sipping on some bubbly as you wait to walk down the aisle to marry the man you have prayed so hard for.

Hopefully you are wearing the biggest smile on your face, an elegant, but saucy backless wedding gown and a hairpiece composed of white and cream peonies and roses.

Hopefully you have picked out shoes that are not only comfortable, but also double as dancing shoes.

I pray that today is a calm, beautiful day full of God’s love, family and friends’ love, and the love for the man you will soon call your husband. May this day always be one you and your husband come back to in remembrance of all of the love, fun, happiness, joy, and most importantly, the day you made promises to cherish each other and live a life committed to one another in God’s love.

Now, go dance, eat, drink and get married!

If there was one piece of advice you could tell a bride or a groom, what would it be?

Goodness, I would have to tell a bride and her groom to dance a lot at their reception. Soak up all of the love you feel during such a special time, and have FUN. This day only comes once in a lifetime and it should be cherished. Take all of that love and bottle it up and spend the rest of your life together putting that love to work in your marriage.

What are some of your favorite wedding vendors in Mississippi?

Goodness, it’s difficult to pick, but there are four that stand out to me, and it doesn’t hurt that I personally know each of the owners and think they are fantastic.

Lovegood Weddings: This has been such a fun vendor to watch grow. Lauren takes her love of antique goodies and creates beautiful, dream weddings for her customers. I think it’s amazing how she has turned that love into a career, and I live vicariously through her as she searches for the perfect vintage pieces to add to her collection.

Molly Gee Hair + Makeup: I have known Molly Gee since high school and always loved her sense of fashion and her adorable hair styles. I even persuaded her into making not one, not two, but three cocktail dresses for me to wear to different events. When she began creating hairpieces, I made sure to collect a few of them as well. When I saw that she added cosmetology and makeup to her list of many talents it made so much sense! Her work has always been gorgeous and I know that it will continue in that same fashion. I look forward to seeing what she will come up with next.

Blake McCollum Photography: Boy, oh boy are his photographs to die for! His blog post “Down at the Water’s Edge” made me absolutely weak in the knees, and I have been watching him closely since. He has such a special eye for brides and captures photos of them in a way that every bride wants to be portrayed. I am amazed at every wedding he photographs and his talent to capture the essence of such a special moment.

Twig Florals: Even though Bronwen Wiggins, owner of Twig Florals, is not based in Mississippi, she grew up here and up until a few years ago, still lived in Mississippi. I was lucky enough to meet Bronwen in high school and then pledge the same sorority in college. I had no idea of her hidden floral talent! When she began her business I was not only amazed at her work, but also quite proud. Her mix of neutrals and deep, vibrant hues create a magical floral design and certainly know how to make a girl feel lovely.

“Anyone may have diamonds: an heirloom is an ornament of quite a different kind.” – Elizabeth Aston

We all love the idea of getting our grandparents heirlooms. They’re pieces of quality and love that we want to treasure and keep on display for all who enter our lives to see. We want to be able to tell the stories that are behind the piece – whatever it might be – to share those memories with those closet to us. But with all the fast-fashion and quick-trends that surround us today, have we stopped to think about what heirlooms we can create?

Michael N Foster is a wetplate photographer that is in the business of creating heirlooms. His photography style, that dates back to 1848, is a style that can create a memory that last over 160 years. It’s a unique and classic way to capture a moment that can last a lifetime – and more.

First, could you explain what tintype/wetplate photography is and a little bit of the process behind it?

The wetplate collodion process is the same process that was used to make pictures during the Civil War. It was invented in 1848 by Frederick Scott Archer, an Englishman. The process involves creating a light sensitive emulsion on a metal plate (tintype) or glass plate (ambrotype), exposing the plate in the camera, and developing the plate. The process has to be completed before the chemicals dry out, hence the name wetplate. A darkroom is required. My darkroom is in a 5’x8′ covered trailer. That allows me to be mobile and make tintypes in the field.

How did you get your start in tintype photography?

Four or five years ago, I attended a workshop in Clarksdale, MS called Rebirth. It was hosted by some friends of mine…Will Jacks, Chris Williams and Sarah Hodzic. They billed the workshop as a workshop for photographers who were looking for “it” when they aren’t really sure what “it” is. We spent a week getting lost in the Mississippi Delta with a bunch of old analog cameras. There were writing exercises and photography demonstrations. There was a guy there doing tintype demonstrations by the name of Euphus Ruth, and it only took one time seeing the process for me to get hooked. I knew it was something I wanted to learn how to do. After the workshop, I spent a year reading about the process before I ever got the nerve to buy the chemicals. Like I said, that’s been four or five years ago now, and I’m still learning the process.

What is the inspiration behind your photography?

I’m not sure I truly know the answer to this question yet. I definitely feel the pull of the Delta. I just FEEL the history when I’m there…the struggle between black and white, rich and poor, good and evil, history and change. I’m happy when I’m there wandering. I’m really drawn to portraits, too. I’ve recently discovered the work of Julia Margaret Cameron. Her portraits from the 1860’s and 70’s are amazing. I would like to take my portrait work in this direction.

What are some of the most unique ways you’ve seen your photography used?

Butch Anthony is a pretty well-known artist in Alabama. He draws these really funky skeletons on old photos. I did some tintypes of some friends of his not too long ago, and I know he skeletonized at least one of them. It was quite the honor.

What is your favorite part of shooting weddings/bridal sessions?

I do occasionally get commissioned to shoot a wedding. They are usually creative types that know what tintypes are. The thing about tintypes, it is a really archival form of photography. Some of them have lasted over 160 years (and counting). If properly taken care of, tintypes will outlast the people in them (and anyone who knows them). That’s why I am really drawn to classic portraits, bridal portraits, etc. They become family heirlooms that should last a few hundred years.

What’s secretly your favorite type of photography that you do?

I love all of the old analog processes…tintype, film, polaroids, etc, but I still enjoy shooting digital, too. My favorite, by far, is tintypes. There’s nothing about the process I don’t like. I like the slow, methodical thinking required. I love smell of the chemicals. I love watching the images come to life in the darkroom. I love the look on people’s faces when they see the process. It really is the closest thing to magic I’ve ever seen.

How do you think your photography style can be used to tell a unique wedding story?

Shooting tintypes, by default, makes for a unique wedding story. Not only is it aesthetically different than everything else being done, but the subjects have to be present and involved through the process. Not only do you get a one-of-a-kind, tangible heirloom, but the experience of watching the image come to life is just icing on the cake.

What are some of your favorite wedding vendors in Mississippi?

I spent a couple years in the wedding circles. I don’t so much anymore, but here are a few of my absolute favorite: Erin Napier at Lucky Luxe, Will Jacks (photographer), Beth Morgan Cowan (photographer).

Offering guests food to eat and beverages to drink is something that every good Southern host knows to do. That simple gesture of hospitality is a way that we fully welcome people into our homes and our hearts. And it’s exactly how our mamas taught us to treat every person that walks into our lives.

Whether you’re welcoming a few people into your home with a batch of home-made biscuits and a tall glass of iced sweet tea or you’re inviting hundreds of people to celebrate your marriage and the next chapter of your life, Mississippians know that the food and catering that you offer your guests is just as much a representation of you as the decorations you choose.

Kelly and Matthew Pittman of Elements Catering & Floral Design out of Columbia, MS are in the business of showing who you and your fiancé are through their food, drink, and floral creations. They understand that this day is all about showcasing your story as a couple.

How did you get your start in catering and floral design?

After working jobs that we really liked we got to a point where we both wanted to do something we both loved. The mediocre was not good enough. We got married eight wonderful years ago, but looking back we both would have done things differently. Knowing what that feeling felt like we told one another that we didn’t want any more brides to feel that way. Together we had a brilliant idea. We decided to start up a company that ensures the feeling of “I should have done things differently” to never grace the minds of future brides. The beginnings of a beautiful company started to be conceived.

What is the inspiration behind your design?

We are inspired most by love. It’s not everyday you fall in love, so when you find someone and this feeling you can not quite explain consumes you, you know it’s someone to hold on to. The thing that allows us to do what we really want to do is that powerful four letter word. We appreciate the people that allow us to do what we love by simply being in love. We like to show the couple in love that their day can be all they hoped it to be and more.

What are some of the most unique ways you have seen your services used?

To spotlight one day in-particular would be doing a great injustice to each bride. They each have a special something that is unique as to how they want to approach their day. We are fortunate enough to ensure that each special detail make the uniqueness of their day come to life.

What is your favorite part of creating a wedding design?

One of our favorite parts is getting to know the bride on a personal level. We feel as if we get to know the brides we can appropriately fulfill the dreams she has for her wedding day and then they can become a reality. We like to remind the brides that the wedding planning part is so much more that just a process. It’s the beginning of a life long journey of the couples life together. We consider it a real honor to be involved in the beginning of a journey that will last forever. Our company is called Elements, the reason being is to make reference to all the ingredients that we use to bring together to make our delicious food and beautiful floral arrangements. Enjoy your time together as a fiancé because soon you both will become one. Learn the things that make you happy while making delightful memories. If at any point you find yourself discourages, remind one another why you fell in love in the first place. Make memories that you will be excited to share in the future filled with smiles.

And, if tears must be involved, make sure they are tears of Joy!

On a day that some might call the most stressful, whirlwind of a day you’ll ever experience in your life, it’s nice to have people that are of a calm and peaceful spirit in your corner.

Someone that will remind you that the moments that you’ll want to remember forever are the in-between moments. That 45 second belly laugh after a posed photo with your Aunt Pauline, the tear you shed when your best friend since kindergarten gives an amazing toast at your reception, or the tight embrace of your loved one after the ceremony is over and you slip away from the crowd to let it all sink it.

Those in-between moment are what husband and wife photography duo April and Paul Russell have built their photography business off of. The main mission of April and Paul photography is to banish the norm of hurried interactions of fake, stiff poses and awkward smiles from the norm of wedding photography.

They aim to capture the real moments – the real story – the real you.

As one of the most long-standing wedding photography businesses in Mississippi that truly do aim to tell each couple’s stories through photographs, we’re honored to have April and Paul kick off our 2016 Mississippi Makers series. You’re in for a treat with this one, folks.

How did you get your start in photography?

I (April) got my start in photography while Paul was working at a job in Jacksonville, FL. He bought me my first DSLR and I spent a lot of my time taking photos of our kiddos day to day lives. We spent some time living in beautiful Perdido Key, FL for a while after that which is where I really started diving in and learning the ins and outs of what my camera could do. At the time Paul was still working a ton of hours at his job. We longed to spend more time at home with the kids so Paul quit his job and begin learning the ropes as well. Being such a big gadget nerd already, he picked it up super fast!

April & Paul Russell and their sweet family

What is the inspiration behind your photography?

Our inspiration comes from each of our couples and their story. We choose to tell each story as authentically as possible. We aren’t list checkers. We believe that wedding photography should be about the moments and not staged. Those moments are the ones that make each wedding story unique.

What is special about being a husband/wife photography duo?

I would say one of the big pros is that because we live/work/do life together on a daily basis, we have come to know each other pretty well. I know what Paul is taking pictures of on the wedding day and he knows what I’m taking photos of as well. It also allows us to split up for me to go with the bride and him with the groom (if that’s necessary), which is great for the couples so they can see what the other was doing while they weren’t around when they get their pictures.

What is your favorite part of shooting weddings/bridal sessions?

Our favorite part is the unknown. Even with all the planning that goes into a wedding day (which is SUPER important), there are always things that happen or don’t happen that causes an audible. We enjoy the high of having to go to plan B sometimes. Often this pushes our creativity to a new level and allows us to step outside of our comfort zone.

What’s your favorite part of being involved with people’s wedding?

We always say that your wedding day is the second most important day of your life. The first day should be the day you come to believe in Christ. With that being said, because it is an important day, we don’t take it lightly that we’ve been asked to be a part of it. Our favorite part of being involved is seeing the love that goes into it from family and friends, watching a marriage begin right in front of our eyes, and getting to know the couple even more.

How do you think you and your husband told your story through your wedding?

Unfortunately there wasn’t much of OUR story told through our wedding day. We had never been informed about the importance of having our day documented and didn’t spend anytime really Googling how to plan properly. We had a very small ceremony with very few people and no reception. Looking back, we definitely regret it. It doesn’t matter if your guest list is 500 people or 5 people, it deserves to be documented well. Your kids and grandkids will thank you.

If you could’ve written your future selves a note to read on your wedding day, what would it have said?

April: Your wedding day is an important day. Do what makes you and Paul happy. But most of all don’t forget that you have a lifetime with this amazing man and this is just one day.

Paul: Hey man, slow down and enjoy each and every season of life. Life moves so fast and you can get so bogged down in the day to day grind that one day you’ll wake up and realize the things you took for granted. One day your son will no longer need you to start his bathwater or your daughter will be too cool to sit in your lap and watch Disney movies… Enjoy every moment while you can. Soak up the date nights with your wife and let her know she’s special and loved.

If there was one piece of advice you could tell a bride or groom, what would it be?

April: Remember that this is your day. You will receive a ton of advice and it’s all well and good but you can’t forget that this day is about what YOU want as a couple. Your marriage is what’s most important. When things go wrong just take it with a grain of salt. Also, don’t go with the trends, just do you.

Paul: Be her rock. Regardless of how much planning goes on, its inevitable that something will go sideways. What better way to prove she’s making a good decision than to be there for her to relax her nerves or anxiousness during a time when others my be spazzing. You know what she needs better than anyone.

What are some of your favorite wedding vendors in Mississippi?

We work with so many amazing vendors it would be hard to mention them all!

December 31st is always a good day to reflect. It’s a day that you can sit and think back on all of the things – good and bad – that the year has had to offer. There is an importance to that, we think. It makes you stop and appreciate all that you’ve accomplished in a year and enjoy where you are in life right now before your mind starts to wander to setting goals and what the future will hold in the upcoming year.

With 2016 only hours away from making its entrance into the world, we couldn’t think of a better time to reflect and share with all of you a few of our milestones of 2015! This year has been such a tremendously great first full year for Rasberry Greene. It’s been a year of new friendships, of construction, of new beginnings and traditions, and of joy.

Every week this year we thought, how can we love our couples and families more? And every week our hearts grew a little larger as we welcomed new couples and their families to The Gin. – Lauren Zumwalt

Jan 1, 2015 ~ Booking for Rasberry Greene officially begins!

A project like this doesn’t come about by accident. It starts with a vision, a desire to create and to see a dream come to life.

For Donnie Zumwalt, the best way to share the joy he experiences caring for this beautiful land is to invite others in just as the Rasberry/Nester family did for him so many years ago. After years of watching his father-in-law carefully tending to this incredible place, he eventually took over as caretaker. Together, he and Lauren decided that the little tree farm was too beautiful to keep to themselves – and Rasberry Greene was born!

With the dream set into action, a slab for The Gin was poured. And with a slab comes the foundation for all the events and memories that are to come. On January 1st, 2015, booking for Rasberry Greene officially began!

Win The Gin

We kicked off 2015 the best way we knew how; a #winthegin giveaway! With the #winthegin giveaway, our followers were able to win a wedding at Rasberry Greene! The winner had their pick of all 2015 wedding dates at The Gin. We loved being able to start the year off with this fun giveaway that took place on through our social media. We were so happy to see just how many people wanted to get married in our neck of the woods before the The Gin was even completed!

Here comes The Gin!

Now, the dream is starting to take shape. The walls for The Gin are finally starting to come up, and for the first time, we can see a glimpse of the grand structure Donnie and Lauren sketched and resketched, planned and envisioned for so long. Soon, happy souls will fill this space as families are joined, beloved traditions come to life and promises that will be spoken beneath the trees.

We could finally say it, “Here comes The Gin!”

“Your Story in the Details” Launch

You see, we feel like your story is the most beautiful part of your wedding day and the foundation for years of happy marriage to come. We want to help you tell it!

So, we started a series to help you to connect with the folks, right here at home in Mississippi, who can help you bring your memories and moments – your story – to life.

Each craftsman or artist in this series agreed to not only introduce us to their incredible Mississippi-made products or services, but also to share their story and the deeper meaning behind the items they create or the service they provide.

This was one of our favorite blog series in 2015! We can’t wait to keep expanding this list in 2016.

First Proposal at The Gin

More and more we find ourselves playing host to moments – a stolen glance, a quick kiss or squeeze of the hand. It seems the trees are echoing our collective joy and calling out to others to join us here in this quiet place, to revel in happiness beneath their branches.

These moments, experienced, cherished and remembered for years to come, are what inspired us to open up every inch of this beautiful place to the talented people who so beautifully capture each glance, kiss and embrace.

This engagement session was so special to us because Chad and Beka were our first couple to actually get engaged on our property! Chad surprised Beka with an intimate proposal on the porch of The Gin. A few months later they returned to Rasberry Greene with photographer Brooke Davis to take their breathtaking engagement photos among the trees.

First wedding in The Gin

When the Rasberry Greene team gathered together to imagine the future of this beautiful place nestled deep in the Piney Woods of South Mississippi, an image of a particular bride emerged time and again.

We told stories of her quintessential southern childhood – growing up helping her Grandpa in the yard, learning to cook in her Grandma’s kitchen. She grew up amidst a swirl of stories of times gone by, imagining a simple, love-filled home for herself one day, where she would make new stories of her own.

When we first met Taylor, we knew we had found her.

Taylor and Zaniel will forever be remembered as the first couple to be married in The Gin at Rasberry Greene, and we couldn’t have asked for a better first love story to grace this beautiful place.

Details come to life

You know that love is poured into a place when you get excited over tiny details such as lighting and little gems of decorations. We were so excited to see the huge, industrial chandelier go up in The Gin, as well as the matte black sconces that really tie in the feel that The Gin gives off. This might seem like a small milestone to some, but here at Rasberry Greene, we were so excited to really see all these details come to life!

Rasberry Greene shirts are here!

We absolutely love seeing folks out and about in our shirts. We swell with thankfulness because we wouldn’t be here without the support of the community and friends that we have gained throughout this year. Seeing the shirts on people are just little reminders of that fact! And we think they’re pretty stylish and comfortable! We might be a little biased though..

Geometric Inspired Wedding at Rasberry Greene

Since we first pushed back the gates at Rasberry Greene, we have played host to a unique array of talented Mississippi wedding vendors, photographers, stylists and the most talented dreamers among us.

Sharing the results of these ideas, the moments captured, is such an honor for us.

This gorgeous styled shoot from BlackBird Creative is a great representation of local creatives getting together to make something that inspires us. We are so happy that these local creatives feel inspired by our grounds and are able to use them to make astonishing work where no photoshoot or project looks the same as the last. Keep doing what you’re doing, guys!

Blue Ribbon Vendor, y’all!

The heart of any wedding in the South is representative of the culture of the people who live here. They’re full of love, family tradition and recipes, and stories that have been passed down for generations. At Rasberry Greene, we love to celebrate weddings because we love to celebrate family heritage, and we’re always looking for others who feel the same.

Southern Weddings Magazine is the South’s premier wedding publication. At SW they choose to honor the love, the stories, and the traditions that are the beating heart of your wedding day. Simply, they love weddings. They want their brides to have access to every credible resource imaginable, because we’re all family here!

Any company that treats their brides as family is our kind of people! That’s why when we found out we were chosen as a Southern Weddings Blue Ribbon Vendor, we were over the moon. We felt like we were nestled in among a group of folks that has the same love for people’s stories and tradition that we hold so dearly.

Cotton Gin Market

Supporting local Mississippi creators, artists, and storytellers is something that we have believed in since the very beginning.

We believe in the hard work and passion that our neighbors and friends pour into their work every single day. We believe in the dreams and stories that lead each craftsman and collector to do what they so lovingly do. And we believe in the powerful community and impact of small town makers.

This strong belief in our fellow local vendors has led us to the creation of a new, local, annual event – The Cotton Gin Market.

The stunning diversity of our vendors is what truly made this the event not to miss. Hailing from every corner of the magnolia state, each one of the vendors was more unique than the next. From up-cycled masterpieces and home-made delicacies, to quirky crocheted cacti, to amazing live performances from Honeyboy & Boots; Oh, Jeremiah; and more.

The Cotton Gin Market really flooded our grounds with more new people (we really like to call them friends) than we ever could imagine! We can’t wait to make this market bigger and better in 2016.

Additions to Rasberry Greene

We’re happy to round out this year with little additions to the Rasberry Greene grounds such as the fire pit and archway. We love seeing how each couple and family will use these additions differently because everyone has a different story to tell. And, you should know by now, that we absolutely love being able to tell people’s stories.

Looking forward to the year ahead

Now that we’ve taken the time to step back and enjoy the incredible year that we’ve had in 2015, it’s time to start looking toward 2016 with the most grateful of hearts. Thank you for being a part of the first year of Rasberry Greene!

The dream of this adventure has been years in the making. One might say it started over 80 years ago when Bill & Virgie Rasberry thought there was something special about this place, and continued through Joe & Betty Nester’s love and care of the land. We hope our first year has honored their memory and we look forward to the future as the story continues to unfold. – Lauren Zumwalt

We were so excited to have around 1,000 folks – that we now consider friends – stroll through our booming pines and shop with our 32 amazing local vendors that were scattered inside the Gin and out among those beautiful trees.

The Music of the Cotton Gin Market

Not only were we excited to see folks shop, but to also see them stop and listen to the talented musicians that played on the front porch of the Gin throughout the entire market. Every act was such a treat!

We couldn’t wait to have the Nashville husband/wife, guitar and cello duo, Honeyboy and Boots, play for us on Friday night! Drew Blackwell was born and raised a Mississippi boy and Courtney (originally from Washington state) is a Mississippian by marriage.

We were happy to welcome the touring band “home” and to be able to hear the magical sounds that they created; a perfect blend of folk and blues instrumental music and storytelling lyrics. Their song “Waitin’ On A Song” really shows off that perfect blend!

One of our favorite parts about Honeyboy and Boots coming to play at The Cotton Gin Market was getting to know their story. You know we’re all about that at Rasberry Greene! We loved hearing about how the couple met – since Courtney’s hometown is all the way across the country – and how they feel about our great state now that they no longer live here. Mississippi boy met Washington girl while they were both in college at Mississippi State University and their music swept them to Nashville.

“Even though we live in Nashville right now, our hearts are both in Mississippi. I love the culture, I love the history of the blues. Mississippi is a great state and a well-kept secret from the rest of the country,” says Drew.

After hearing their story, their love for Mississippi and their love for the art of storytelling, we are now even bigger fans of Honeyboy and Boots than we were before! We will be impatiently waiting for their third album to be released in 2016.

On Saturday we were serenaded by Joel Hill, JJ and Luke Campbell, Brad Moreland, and Oh, Jeremiah.

“Country music is about storytelling,” Brad Moreland, veteran performer of 20 years, said, “and I love sharing stories that are people’s favorites, especially if they’ve not heard them in years, and I also love introducing new ones.” For his performance at The Cotton Gin Market at Rasberry Greene, Brad’s repertoire spanned the catalogs of Buck Owens to Merle Haggard with a little John Denver sprinkled in.

Joel Hill and JJ and Luke Campbell were such a joy to listen to and added so much to the CGM experience. JJ even served double-duty as a market vendor! We’re so thankful to these sweet friends for adding so much to our little market in the woods.

Finally, we were honored to have the folk-favorite Oh, Jeremiah perform for us. This sweet duo consists of Laurel-native Jeremiah Stricklin and his fiance, Erin Raber. Jeremiah and Erin were such a joy to work with and a welcome addition to the already incredible music line-up. We talked a bit with Jeremiah before the event about the stories behind their songs and the unique challenge of representing our beloved state as they travel across the U.S.

“We travel a lot and I talk about being from Mississppi on stage every night. Mississippi is important to me because I learned a lot about no one taking you seriously as an artist, because no one takes you seriously as a Mississippian either. I learned really quickly that Mississippi is known for everything except what it is actually about.”

“I’ve brought it upon myself to be the Batman of Mississippi. I go out into the night and I tell people about Mississippi for what it actually it is. It is such a misunderstood and misrepresented place.”

“I love Mississippi so much because we’re exactly who we are.” – Jeremiah Stricklin

Oh, Jeremiah’s song “Mississippi, I’m Yours” perfectly illustrates the special relationship all of us native Mississippian’s have with the home we love so much.

An amazing experience, and the value of a servant’s heart

My parents would have loved to have seen and met all of the musicians, people, and families that came out. With all of the kids running around with their faces painted by the wonderful workers of the MSU Wesley Foundation members, their hearts would have melted.

The MSU Wesley Foundation was a big reason as to why the Cotton Gin Market even came into existence. Cherri Lightsey, from the board of MSU Wesley, approached us about a fun and unique way to raise money for their student ministry. She traveled to several “barn sales” around Tennessee and we thought this could be a fun trend to start in South Mississippi.

And boy was it! With the incredible, servant-hearted workforce of Cherri, Anna Hood, Fred Tyner, and Tim and Dana Chamblee and all the students that were so willing to help where ever needed, the market went off beautifully.

A Greater Purpose

The Cotton Gin Market was a joint effort to provide a fun, family experience for the folks in our area, showcase Mississippi and regional artisans, craftspersons, restauranteurs/specialty foods and musicians, and support the ministry of the MSU Wesley Foundation.

It really exceeded the dreams of our organizers and we can’t wait to do it again! After all was said and done, we were able to donate $1,700 to the Wesley Foundation! We couldn’t have been happier to donate The Gin and the grounds of Rasberry Greene to help support such a great cause.

2016 Cotton Gin Market at Rasberry Greene

Be on the lookout for the 2nd Annual Cotton Gin Market in Fall 2016! We can’t say enough about how happy we were with our first market. We want to see it continue to grow in the years to come. We hope to keep the same wonderful vendors and musicians we had this year, but we hope to see even more local artisans and musicians next year! We have plenty of room out here in Soso, MS, and we’re ready to show folks just what it’s like out here in our neck of the woods.
